Frequently Asked Questions

Is the API different in Develop Mode and Production Mode?

Not really, but there are some differences. Both modes use the same Auto API, but in Production Mode, the available permissions correspond to the actual data points which each car manufacturer has made available. Therefore, you can only retrieve real data from vehicles via the production enabled data points.

What is the difference between Develop Mode and Production Mode?

In broad terms, you build test projects in Develop Mode and test the API with car emulators. The Production Mode enables access to real vehicles with real users and is subject to a car data billing plan.

What are car simulators?

Our in-browser car simulators are designed to enable applications to be tested quickly and seamlessly during the development process. They are basically a simulated Auto API environments in that they react to API calls just like a real vehicle would. Each simulator is also unique with its own serial number and states, bringing the testing experience close to the real world.

Can I have a team account?

Yes, you can create a team or be invited to join multiple teams. Creating a team and adding new members is very simple. First, click on your profile icon in the top right corner of the page, go to “Team Stations”, and then click “Create Team”. Name your team and invite collaborators by email.

Do I need to be a registered company?

While the Develop Mode is free for anyone to explore - moving into Production Mode with your project requires you to provide us with registered company details. This is a legal requirement necessary for handling personalised car data.

How does the billing work for live car data?

You are billed on a monthly basis for the actual number of activated cars during the billing cycle. We will provide you with the breakdown of brands, data points and the number of requests.

Can I start using the platform for free?

Yes, creating an account and using the Develop Mode on the platform is completely free. You can create as many test projects and car emulators as you like.

How does the pricing work for personalised data?

The personalised car data works similarly to streaming - third parties select the data points, or a pre-defined use case bundle, and will be billed on a monthly basis for the actual number of activated vehicles. The monthly price per vehicle depends on the car manufacturer's brand, request frequency and the number of data points that are being updated.

How do I get the user's consent?

To share their personalised car data with a third party, car owners must complete a consent flow. The consent flow asks them to provide the VIN of their car, presents the user with the terms and conditions, and asks them to log into the relevant car maker owner portal and consent to sharing their vehicle’s data.

How are security and data privacy handled?

High Mobility’s SDKs use Public Key Infrastructure on top of the normal access token used in the OAuth protocol. Requests to the Auto API are handled by – but not stored on – Amazon AWS servers within the European Union. Third-parties also need approval before any data access is enabled. High Mobility reviews the application’s Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy and subsequently allows the application to initiate the driver consent flow for new customers and begin accessing vehicle data.

Is the car data only provided in Europe?

Currently the vehicle data is provided in the European Economic Region. Customers in the following countries can grant third-party access to vehicle data: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. More regions will be supported soon.

Which car manufacturers are supported?

More than 11 million vehicles in Europe are compatible with the High Mobility platform, and thousands more are being added every day. With the single Auto API integration, your services will be enabled to access data from newer Alfa Romeo, BMW, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Ford, Jeep, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall vehicles. More manufacturers will be announced in 2021.

Which data points are available?

The High Mobility car data platform supports a wide range of data points organised into car capabilities. While it is possible to pick and choose individual data points on the platform, it is more practical to use our pre-defined bundles. This way, your service covers most manufacturers.

Do I need to install hardware into the vehicle?

No, all newer vehicles are already online and have the necessary equipment on-board. High Mobility speaks directly to the different manufacturer back-end systems and provides you with a unified, software-only interface.

What is personalised car data?

Personalised data amounts to accessing knowledge about a specific vehicle’s state from a remote location. Modern vehicles are full of on-board computers, and each vehicle may know a lot about itself: its odometer reading, fuel level, location, tire pressure, next maintenance needed... there can be hundreds of data points. In other words, personalised car data is the telematics data where the identity of the car and driver are known. It also works a lot like streaming - the third-parties subscribe to specific data points and receive updates until the access is revoked.
